Just like many others, there are chances you may also have missed visiting this place, during your visit in Kerela.

Poovar is a small coastal, fisherman village located 35 km from Trivandrum (Thiruvanathapuram) and 20 km from Kovalam.

There is a magical island beach here called Poovar Island which is surrounded by a river called Neyyar and Arabian Sea on either side.

Me and my wife were in Kovalam, during our 9 days Kerela tour and were preparing for our next destination, Kanyakumari. Then our taxi driver insisted to visit Poovar on the way which we agreed. He was very informative and helpful so far, so there was no question of non-agreement.

This was indeed a great decision 🙂

Trip to Poovar can be defined as a combination of blue sky, golden sand beach, stretch of coconut trees, sea, river, backwaters, motorboats and magnificent views.

You can witness the river Neyyar meeting and ending its journey into the Arabian sea here.

We checked-out from our hotel in Kovalam around 10:30 AM and reached Poovar within 30 minutes. There were many motorboat owners offering ride packages. We selected 90 minutes to-and-fro ride till Poovar island in INR 2500, via an 8 seater motorboat for 2 of us. It was a good deal.

Remember, there is no other way to reach the island beach except the boats (motorboat or countryboat)

Ride started.

As soon as we started the boat ride, the view around us left us in awe. And we understood this is going to be a amazing scenic ride. We thought of using mobile phones for pictures as it was more convenient but immediately took out the DSLR from camera bag.

Flying wild birds, blue water, stretch of coconut trees kissing water here and there: all together were making a picture perfect scene.

We checked google about bird spotting in Poovar, they are: Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Night Heron, Sea Egret, Black Darter, Indian Cormorant eagle and many more. We could not compare much but if you are a bird lover, you may identify them.

After about 20 minutes of ride, our boatman suddenly started turning towards an extreme narrow water lane. To our curiosity, we asked him whether the motor boat will be able to cross it. With a smiling face and some hand gestures, he asked us to relax and enjoy in his own language. Water was so shallow, that he had to pick the motor little upwards so that it does not touch the ground.

But within a minute, we realized this narrow lane is more amazing. At some places you could even see the bottom of the land.

At one place through those lanes, a coconut water stall was setup on a boat. There was no way we could have ignored it.

After about 15-20 minutes passing through those narrow lanes, we reached the rough backwaters. Far away we could see the golden sand beach and also the point where river meets the sea.

There were few resorts also visible on the other side, one of them even having floating cottages.

Make a note, this place also has some beautiful resorts overlooking the island beach and sea, which you can book and spend some peaceful time with your loved ones.

Soon we reached the beach, which was super clean and there were very few people. Local crowd and fishermen avoid this as its not easily accessible. Our boatman asked us to enjoy and spend around 30-35 minutes on the beach while he will wait.

The sea water was very rough (scary and roaring) as it was monsoon season and wind was heavy. There was barricading using ropes so that people do not go in sea waters.

This beach is not commercialized unlike others in Kovalam, you will not find water activities even in normal season. Swimming is allowed only from Oct to May.

There was just one coconut water shop which was making it more peaceful. After clicking n number of photos, we ran to the coconut shop and once again sipped one each 🙂

Soon, it was time to say good-bye to the beach and head back. It was already around 1 hour 10 minutes from our schedule of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

During return, it just took 15-20 minutes to reach the place from where we started. We tipped the boatman and reached our Taxi with an aim of staying in one of the floating resorts during our next visit.

Soon, we started our onward journey to Kanyakumari, while re-visiting Poovar in photos en-route.
